Peru Climbing
In
the Cordillera Blanca Range of the Andes, mountaineering
is world class, and we offer an intermediate program for
those with basic skills and two expeditions for advanced
climbers. Craggy peaks, ice ascents, with long rappels
are what to expect from climbing in Peru.
Beginners and intermediate climbers with
fundamental alpine and glacier skills may choose Toqllaraju
- Chopikalki Expedition. Review techniques and climb
from base camp in Ishinca Valley, up the glacier of Nevado
Uros Este, Nevados Ishinca, Toqllaraju, as well as Ranrapallca
and Nevado de Copa for fifteen days. To further hone your
skills, extend your stay and attempt to summit Chopikalki
(20,847 ft.). Situated northeast of and connected to Perus
highest peak, Huascaran Sur, it is the third highest summit
encircling the Llanganuco Glacier forming the immense
and dramatic Angosh Cirque. $2820 per person - 15 days
Departure Dates: 7 Jun 2003, 22 Jun 2003, 5 Jul 2003,
20 Jul 2003, 2 Aug 2003, and 17 Aug 2003
Alpamayo
is in many people's minds the most beautiful mountain in
the world, and the goal of this expedition is to climb the
peak's elegant Southwest Face. Advanced climbers who have
strong alpine skills, successful high altitude experience,
excellent physical condition and the ability to climb 60+
degree ice with a 20 pound pack. Base camp is established
in a small valley right beneath Kitaraju and 19,411-foot
Alpamayo, then spend several days establishing an advanced
base camp between the two peaks. In fifteen days the group
will attempt to summit both peaks including the 19,817 peak
of Kitaraju. $3530 per person - 15 days
Trip Date: 24 Jun 2003 - 8 July 2003
Nevado Huascaran
is the highest peak in Peru and one of the world's most
imposing summits. It offers a challenging ascent requiring
strong intermediate level alpine skills, and an unusual
opportunity for climbers who want to make an ascent to very
high altitude. For though it stands nearly two thousand
feet higher than Mt. McKinley, Huascaran's position at about
latitude 9 degrees south spares it from the extremely low
temperatures and severe storms that are commonplace in the
extreme latitudes. Experience at altitudes above 20,000
feet, solid snow and ice climbing skills, including the
ability to climb 45-degree ice with a full pack is a prerequisite.
Excitement is great as final steps to the top of the Western
Hemisphere's highest summit are made. The views of the Cordillera
Blanca, the Cordillera Negra, and out over the Amazon Basin
are fittingly magnificent. $3200 per person - 17 days
Trip Dates: 7 Jun 2003 - 23 Jun 2003 and 12 Jul 2003 - 28
Jul 2003
Mountaineering doesn't get much better than
the peaks of Peru. Not only are you faced with glaciated
peaks and rugged terrain, the country is accommodating to
tourists. Most of your time will be spent climbing or acclimatizing
and not getting to base camp.
