 Maquipucuna
Reserve, within the Choco-Andean Bioregion, is a non profit conservation
project aimed at protecting the cloudforest in Ecuador for research,
preservation, and education. Using the lodge as a base, you can
hike through
the reserve with knowledgable guides and learn about the flora and
fauna of the forest and the role it plays in the global environment.
Nearly
2,000 species of plants including 90 species of ferns and orchids
thrive amongst the humid mountainous climate. Forty five varieties
of mammals, such as Armadillo, Spectacled Bear, Anteater and bats
live with countless species of butterflies, moths and insects.
The Avenue of Volcanoes offers hiking, birdwatching
and scenic driving just south of Quito, as an easy day trip. Other
two or three day trips include Machanilla National Park, Isla de
la Plata (or the Little Galapagos),
Podocarpus National Park, and Kapawi
Reserve in the Amazon Basin.
