Highlands:
Dotted with volcanoes and formed by dynamic geologic activity, the highlands of Guatemala hold some of the country's most scenic places. Lake Atitlan located at 10,000 feet was formed by juxtaposed volcanic calderas. Several endangered plant and animal species cling to the slopes in broadleaf and pine forests. The "poc" bird which spends its entire lifetime on the water, is one of the region's endangered species. Several picturesque villages and important cultural settlements along the lake's shoreline have a Pre-Hispanic origin. The major earthquakes that struck this region have not destroyed one of the oldest and most beautiful cities in the Americas: Antigua. Dating back to 1542, Antigua is said to be the first planned city in the new world. Guatemala's indigenous groups descend upon Chichicastenango's narrow cobblestone streets twice a week to trade colorful works of art, wooden mask carvings and embroidered garments.

Tikal:
Rising above dense jungle canopy, Tikal is believed to be the most important of all Mayan cities. The civilization's astonishing accomplishments in mathematics, astronomy and architecture are evident in over 4,000 temples, pyramids and structures that are still mostly intact. Archaeologists have learned much about this ancient civilization which lived here for more than 2,000 years. However many mysteries still remain. The Tikal area, encompassing 222 square miles around the ruins, has been designated a National Park. More than 300 bird species can be easily seen around Tikal's cleared areas and magnificent mahogany, teak and palm trees, orchids, bromeliads, and hundreds of other flowering plants grow.

Largely untouristed Guatemala and Honduras offer you a glimpse of Latin American countries with strong indigenous roots and lasting culture, not to mention ancient ruins.
