Quetzal in PanamaL
ocated just outside the city in Soberania National Park is the Canopy Tower Hotel. Once a military radar facility in the former Panama Canal Zone, the top floor of the hotel allows viewers to see and forest canopy at eye-level as well as the Pacific entrance to the Panama Canal. Owner Raul Arias hosts watchers from all over the world at his hotel where hundreds of rare and beautiful birds make their appearance regularly. More than 350 species have been spotted near this area in a single day!

Another one of the world’s best birdwatching sites is Pipeline Road which runs into the heart of Panama’s rainforest. This 11 kilometer unpaved road begins just north of Gamboa and winds through the park’s lowland monsoon rainforest. Among the species seen here are the black-tailed trogon, ringer hingfisher, long-tailed woodcreeper, black-breasted puffbird, shining honeycreeper, and several species of the parrot family. You might also spot a howler monkey, a white-faced capuchin monkey, or a three toed sloth while you are at it.
