A
province that is made up of mainly indigenous tribes, Bocas
del Toro is one of Central America's premiere scuba diving
locations. The archipelago has remained relatively unchanged over
the years. Locals still travel between the islands in dugout canoes.
With the advent of the Central America Peace Accord of the early
1990's, the region became more accessible to travelers and has since
seen a number of mid-range hotels and restaurants open in and around
the town of Bocas del Toro.
Among the
highlights of this paradise are its coral reefs and sandy deserted
beaches. You can find dozens of types of coral and hundreds of
different species of fish. Snorkeling is also very popular and
a mask, snorkel, and fins can be rented for just $12 per day in
town. Along the coral reef in the Bastimentos Marine National
Park on the island of Bastimentos, you can see stunning queen
angels, fairy basselets, rock beauties and four-eyed butterfly
fish.
