Some of the best and most established jungle lodges are located
at Manu and Tambopata in Peru. Manu is the largest rainforest
park in the world, encompassing 4.5 million acres. Manu
Lodge is the only lodge in the entire national park.
Over 1,000 species of birds, 1,200 species of butterflies, 200
species of mammals, and countless species of plants live in the
pristine, uncut forest. Travel along the river for excursions
under the canopy of massive trees and hike
among the rich undergrowth on well-maintained trails. Monkeys,
caimans, and families of giant otters inhabit Juarex, the adjacent
oxbow lake. From an elevated lookout tower, you can see the colorful
blue, yellow, and red-bellied macaws in their nesting site. Over
two million acres of uninhabited land comprise the Tambopata National
Park where the Tambopata
Research Center is located. The trails around the research
center offer easy access to the rainforest which includes seven
distinct rainforest habitats-including floodplain forest, terra
firme forest, bamboo forest, and palm swamps. The world's largest
macaw clay lick is located here. For total emersion into the virgin
rainforest, Peru's Amazonas region is unbeatable.
Cuzco and
Machu Picchu:
Capital of the Inca Empire, Cuzco is a perfect base for Andean
adventures. Plan on a day or two to acclimate to Cuzco's 10,800
ft. altitude. This time is perfect for strolling through the historic
city. The narrow 15th century Inca roads, alleyways and stone
walls, majestic Cathedrals and ancient Incan ruins are not to
be missed. A visit to the colorful market town of Pisac and the
historic Ollantaytambo make a great day trip from Cuzco. There
are plenty of nearby ruins and sites worth visiting before moving
on to Machu Picchu. Board the train or head off on foot via the
Inca Trail to the breathtaking Lost City of the Incas, Machu Picchu.
The Lost City was indeed a complete city with industrial, residential
and agricultural sectors. The city remained undiscovered until
1911 and is remarkably well preserved, with stairways, temples
and terraces waiting to be discovered by you.
Lake Titicaca:
The highest navigable lake in the world, Lake Titicaca, is home
to the fascinating cultures of the Uros Indians and the weavers
of Taquile Island. Our cultural and scenic adventures begin in
Puno, on the shores of Lake Titicaca. Visit the floating reed
islands and gain insight to the vanishing culture of the Uros
Indians. A tour of Taquile Island will introduce to you the agriculture
of the Quechua-speaking Indians. For those wishing to travel further
south, Lake Titicaca is a gateway into Bolivia.
North Coast:
The north coast of Peru is an archaeological goldmine. Home to
the pre-Inca civilizations of the Moche and Chimu, the area is
dotted with sites from recently excavated tombs. Chan Chan is
considered the largest pre-Colombian adobe citadel of the Chimu
Empire. An estimated 50,000 people once lived in the labyrinth
coastal city. Immense ruins and entire archaeological complexes
exist in this area like the Lambayeque-period Tucume, or the "Valley
of the Pyramids." The ancient fortified ceremonial center of Pacatnamu
is situated on a bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean. See Pampa
Grande, Peru's largest standing adobe pyramid and the lavish 1,700-year-old
tomb of the Lord of Sipan at Huaca Rajada, acknowledged as the
"discovery of the century" because of the vast quantity and high
value of the gold and silver treasures uncovered there. Walking
tours of colonial Trujillo and a visit to the fascinating witches'
market of Chiclayo complete the trip into the past. Several daily
flights from Lima to Trujillo and Chiclayo enable fully-customized
one, two and three night tours.
South Coast:
This coastal desert area is where the pre-Inca Nazca, Ica and
Paracas civilizations once thrived. Our starting point for this
dry, arid region is Ica, Peru's wine-making capital. The Regional
Museum houses mummies, pottery and textiles from the Paracas and
Nazca Cultures. A short drive away is the Huacachina Lagoon, a
lush oasis in the dunes. The famous Las Dunas Resort offers swimming,
horseback riding and sand surfing on the giant dunes. Marvel at
the centuries-old Nazca lines in the sand that resemble huge birds
and animals or view wildlife on a yacht cruise
to Ballestas Islands in Paracas Bay.
We arrange
trips to the Mayan ruins of Machu Picchu, Pisac, Nazca cultures
and more. Visit Cuzco, the gateway city to Machu Picchu. The Amazon
basin is increbile from Peru! Out of Iquitos, cruise into the
Amazon. Choose one of our set itineraries or create your own custom
trip with one of our trip consultants.
