Colca
lodge is located north of Arequipa
at an elevation of 10,725 feet. Access is through a combined
paved and dirt road which crosses over peaks of 16,000
ft. in a four hour trip. The region's climate is dry and
sunny from May to November with warm days and cool nights,
especially during the months of May to August with temperatures
that reach below freezing. The rainy season starts in
December and ends in April.
Because of the lodge's location high
in the mountains the air is thin and the sun intense and
abundant. The use of sunscreen and consumption of plenty
of liquids to avoid dehydration is recommended. Make sure
to bring hiking boots and bathing suit regardless of the
season.
Continental breakfast is included and there is a restaurant
for lunch and dinner. The Colca Lodge has a spacious living
room with a fireplace, charming bar and a game room with
an assortment of table games. The main terrace, with a
spectacular view to the Colca Valley, is one of the favorite
spots for sunbathing.
In the hotel's surroundings one can
take pleasant walks, fish for trout at the river, or take
short horseback
riding tours. On a short walk from the hotel explore
the ruins of an ancient Collagua settlement, Uyo Uyo or
to the archaeological zone of Chininea. Tours of the area's
Pre-Inca ruins or 16 surrounding villages of Spanish origin
each with an impressive colonial church.
For the adventurous, spectacular
trekking
routes are available which may include a two or three
day exploration of the canyon; the descent from the base
of Sabancaya volcano ( 19,607 ft ) to the Valley floor
or the excursion to the birth place of the Amazon River.
Those interested in
mountain biking, mountain
climbing and whitewater
rafting may also have activities prearranged here.
