In Lake Titicaca lies Suasi Island home
to Albergue Campestre Suasi, otherwise known as Suasi
Lodge is positioned 12,496 feet above sea level and 50
miles from Puno. This privately owned island is an ecological
reserve and the lodge is an environmentally sound haven
made with stone, eucalyptus wood, reeds and thatched roofs
of the grass that is found on the altiplano. Entirely
solar powered down to the hot water, all aspects of the
lodge have been given the utmost environmental concern
without compromising comfort. Although not completely
self sufficient yet, they grow organic crops of native
grains and vegetables like potatoes, corn and tarhui,
along side imported crops. Native flowers, herbs, trees
and plants in danger of extinction are being cultivated
in the greenhouse.
In
an effort to thwart the extinction of vicuna, wild members
of the species have been introduced to the island as well
as the Andean Chinchilla. Cormorants and other birds are
being protected which offers opportunities to view them.
A trout farm provides fresh fish to the lodge as well
as the chance to fish for your own dinner.
Fishing, sailing and rowing are available
throughout the year due to the mild climate. Martha Giraldo
is the owner and host of the lodge and she and the staff
will provide a retreat well worth the travel.
