Hikers and mountain enthusiasts
will want to explore the the National Park of Huascaran
with the highest Andean range, the Cordillera Blanca,
in Peru. Wildlife is easily seen here and the climate
is comfortable. Arrive by road, car or bus, from Lima
or Trujillo and stay at a comfortable hotel. Take day
tours of the area or trek in the Cordillera
Blanca.
Huaraz is a center for mountaineering,
serious alpine climbing expeditions are based here. Climbers
must have the basic or advanced skills to join an expedition
but a successful summit is the greatest reward.
Botanists will want to search out the Puya
Raimondi, the largest member of the bromeliad family.
At up to 39 feet high it only blooms once in one hundred
years.
