Considered to be the second most important
city in Peru, lies at the foot of snow-capped "El
Misti" volcano. It is called "the white city"
because it's mostly built from "sillar" an off
white volcanic rock. This noble and beautiful southern
city is a showcase of fine architecture, with it's colonial
buildings, mansions and churches against a perennial blue
sky. The well preserved Monastery of Santa Cantalina is
the most impressive religious example of the architecture
characteristics of the XVI and XVII centuries. Take a
day
tour of the city or surrounding countryside.
Arequipa is the departure city for Colca
Canyon, where you may stay at El
Parador del Colca or Colca
Lodge as your base for two
or three night tours of one of the deepest canyons
in the world. In the Valley
of the Volcanoes, hike the area and take a short run
down the Majes River.
