A picturesque land rich in traditional culture, Venezuela's Andes
host a myriad of environments from dense, tropical cloudforests
to rugged, snow-capped peaks. Orchids, bromeliads and heliconias
provide habitat for hummingbirds and the beautiful Andean cock-of
-the-rock bird. The Andes are laced with icy rivers and carpeted
with lush valleys of evergreen, deciduous forest and graceful
alpine meadows.
The hard-working,
resourceful and religious Andean people are hearty souls, many
of whom still live and farm the land much as they have for centuries.
Burrows are still a primary mode of transportation between most
mountain villages, and electricity still has not found its way
to some of the more remote locations.
Caribbean:
Venezuela claims 1,750 miles of Caribbean coastline and 72 islands
in the Caribbean. The tropical Central Coast has mountainous cloud
forest and lowland jungle. Henri Pittier National Park is home
to an astonishing array of tropical flora and fauna and is a bird
lover's paradise. The Park is located in the
migratory route for hundreds of thousands of birds and insects,
including butterflies. Monkeys, ocelots, bats, frogs, snakes,
armadillos, and deer thrive in the humid broadleaf forest environment
rising from sea level to 4,200 feet. A two-hour drive from Caracas,
the city of Maracay serves as the gateway for excursions into
the nearby park with comfortable hotel accommodations located
just on the edge of town.
Scuba
divers and snorkelers will find plenty of places to
enjoy their hobby on the islands of Los Roques, La Blanquilla,
Tortuga, Los Testigos, Morrocoy and Mochima. Just 90 miles north
of Caracas, Los Roques covers 546,166 acres of small flat islands
with white sand, mangroves, and turquoise water. The edge of the
archipelago is surrounded by live, fringing reef that protects
its warm and shallow interior while trade winds cool its beaches.
Some of the best bonefishing occurs here. Since the entire ecosystem
is protected from destruction and overharvesting by the National
Park system, this last great Caribbean sanctuary will remain healthy
for generations to come.
Gran Sabana:
The Lost World Region, or The Gran Sabana, is located where the
Guayana Shield forms a unique and bizarre landscape of huge sandstone
mesas unlike any other place on earth. These 1.8 billion year
old tepuis, or tabletop mountains, tower majestically over the
rolling hills of the savanna grassland and interspersed jungle.
Life atop each tepui has evolved in complete isolation, creating
unique ecosystems found nowhere else on earth. However, due to
the high tannin content in the rivers, animal life is sparse.
The largest waterfall on earth, Angel Falls, flows from the top
of 3,212 foot tall Auyantepui. The waterfall is reached by dugout
canoe from Canaima National Park, which consists of a large part
of the Gran Sabana's great bastion of undisturbed wilderness.
Ciudad Bolivar is the capital of this region and Ciudad Guayana
and Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela's newest city, where most of the steel
manufacturing units are located, are also important cities in
this area.
Los Llanos:
Sprawling for 38,600 square miles across Venezuela's interior,
the Llanos (pronounced Ya-nos) grasslands offer the greatest opportunity
to see Venezuela's wildlife. Over 300 species of birds
have been identified.
Riverbanks,
forest edges and lagoons come to life with active birds and animals
in the morning and evening hours. The dry season, December to
April, offers the best time to see the most animals as they congregate
around small watering holes left as the floodplains dry up. Anteaters,
capybaras, fox, howler monkeys, wild horses and caimans are among
the animals you may see. The rivers teem with piranha, peacock
bass, countless colorful tropical fish and even freshwater dolphins.
During the rainy season it is very probable that a journey in
a dugout canoe will be a portion of your transfer to or from your
selected Llanos lodge. Large cattle ranches are home to hearty
cowboys called Llaneros whose hard-working lifestyle and unforgettable
folk music has become a unique facet of Venezuela's diverse culture.
