The
Lost World Region,
or The
Gran Sabana, is located where the Guayana Shield forms a unique
and bizarre landscape of huge sandstone mesas unlike any other
place on earth.

Travel into the depths of the Lost
World by dugout canoe. |
These 1.8
billion year old tepuis, or tabletop mountains, tower majestically
over the rolling hills of the savanna grassland and interspersed
jungle. Life atop each tepui has evolved in complete isolation,
creating unique ecosystems found nowhere else on earth. However,
due to the high tannin content in the rivers, animal life is sparse.
The largest waterfall on earth, Angel Falls, flows from the top
of 3,212 foot tall Auyantepui. The waterfall is reached by dugout
canoe from Canaima National Park, which consists of a large part
of the Gran Sabana's great bastion of undisturbed wilderness.
Ciudad Bolivar is the capital of this region and Ciudad Guayana
and Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela's newest city, where most of the steel
manufacturing units are located, are also important cities in
this area.
