The
Caura Lodge is located some 155 miles southwest of Ciudad
Bolívar on the riverbanks of the Caura at the outskirts
of the small agricultural
and fishing town of Las Trincheras. Situated inside a
12.36 million acres forest reserve, the largest in Venezuela,
the Caura Lodge is an attractive and picturesque compound
of colonial style structures that offer two choices of
lodging. Sleep beneath a thatched roof Indian hut in hammocks
with mosquito nets escorted by the sounds of the virgin
rain
forests or in one of the only 6 double rooms equipped
with ceiling fans, mosquito nets and private bathrooms
for more comfort. The lodge also counts with kitchen,
living room and a fine cook. A terrace overlooking peculiar
natural scenery is the center of almost all activities
in the camp, such as morning and evening meals or plain
relaxing. The river shore close by is good for fishing,
swimming and exploring with a kayak.
All
inclusive vacation packages are offered and include accommodations,
meals, excursions and roundtrip overland transfers from
Ciudad Bolívar or Puerto Ordaz. Different daily tours
are on hand, such as Cerro Cangrejo (Crab), a magnificent
hiking
trip to a hill from where superb views of the Caura River
course and its untouched rainforest can be enjoyed. Peña
Negra is a sandstone rock island in the middle of the
river. Caño Mato is a small tributary good to observe
river wildlife.
Different Indian villages of the Yekuana (Makiritare)
tribe are found along the riverbanks. For a complete insight
to this seldom tripped region of Venezuela, sign up for
our 4 nights Expedition
to Para Falls, one of the most spectacular yet least
visited waterfalls
in the country.
Overland
transportation
is available from both Ciudad Bolívar and Puerto Ordaz
and charter flights by small planes can leave from Caracas,
Ciudad Bolívar, Puerto Ordaz and other nearby cities to
the little village of Maripa.
