Sucre is located
in the northeast of Venezuela and its capital is Cumana.
Called the "Land of Grace" by Christopher Columbus
when he "discovered" Venezuela during his third
voyage in 1498, it is actually very hard to argue with
the spanish explorer about the denomination. Sucre is
full of coral reefs, white sand beaches and lush valleys
and mountains completely undiscovered yet by american
travelers. A land of coffee, cacao and sugar cane plantations,
a large fishing fleet and the most important producer
of marine salt in Venezuela awaits you with open arms.
The
oldest settlement in continental South America, Cumana
is a pleasant city with some historic remnants of its
glorious past. Sectioned by the Manzanares River, it is
a good getaway for attractions nearby.
East
of Cumana you will find the Mochima National Park, which
is shared with Anzoategui State. Mochima is one of the
finest places in Venezuela and the Caribbean for snorkeling
and scuba diving and is a picturesque and marvelous place
where you can sunbath, hike and sail.
Palm-packed
and postcard Playa Medina, west of the colonial town of
Rio Caribe, is said to be the most beautiful beach of
Venezuela. A little bit further east, the Paria Peninsula
National Park offers secluded and very hard to rival coast
line. Are you lucky enough? Spot a rare manatee at the
Turuepano National Park in the Gulf of Paria.
Shared
with Monagas state, El Guacharo National Park houses the
magnificent Guacharo Cave, Venezuela's best and one of
the most complete cave systems in the world. The cave
can be conveniently visited not only from Cumana, Carupano
or Rio Caribe in Sucre state, but also from Puerto La
Cruz (Anzoategui) and Maturin (Monagas).
