Seen
from the air, La Blanquilla -the white island- resembles
almost a perfect shell. This enchanting
72 square miles island of intense
blue waters lies 50 miles north of Margarita
and 107 miles from Puerto
La Cruz in Venezuela's mainland. This off the beaten
track, low lying portion of land can be visited by air
on a full day, all inclusive tour from Porlamar or by
chartered, all inclusive sailboats usually departing from
Juangriego or Pampatar. Boasting one of the most attractive
landscapes in the Venezuelan seas, La Blanquilla is also
one of the most known islands in the country from a scientific
viewpoint. The flora
is characteristic of arid climates and the island is covered
with cactuses, prickly pears and thorn trees. Parrots,
owls, eagles, frigates, iguanas, lizards, hermit crabs
and wild donkeys and goats.
Americano
Bay, located north of Playa El Yaque, is a spectacular
and secluded white sand beach
of crystal clear blue waters offers wonderful snorkeling. Flanked in the north by a stunning natural rock arch.
Playa El Yaque is lovely, with gorgeous white beaches. There is plenty of coral, including
the rare black, brown feather, brain and purple sea fans,
and the snorkeling
is outstanding. It is possible to swim into deep submerged
caverns and see all kinds of fish, including blueheads,
French angelfish, porcupine fish, balloon fish, red-lipped
blenny, ocean surgeonfish, stripped goatfish, queen and
princess parrotfish. Lacking palm trees, shade is at hand
in caves along the shore. Wall diving
is available and the sunsets are striking.
