Las Aves Archipelago is comprised of two
reefs known as the Windward and Leeward Aves. Located
between Bonaire to the west and Los
Roques to the east, they are separated by a distance
of 15 miles and a channel about a half a mile deep.
Twelve main keys and islets make up Aves
de Barlovento (Windward Aves) and 7 comprise the Aves
de Sotavento (Leeward Aves). They form a shallow central
lagoon and have similar vegetation and underwater fauna
characteristics. The name is derived from the numerous
birds, mostly marine, that either live or migrate there.
Famous for shipwrecks, of particular interest is the wreck
of 15 French war ships on their way to assault Curacao
in 1678.
