Los
Frailes is a small archipelago located 7.5 miles to the
northeast of Margarita, in
front of the port of El Tirano or Playa Fermin. Seven
coral islands of steep slopes
with some beach anchorages compose it. Los Frailes’ waters
are rich for fishing
and are exploited mainly by fishermen from El Tirano.
Great schools of sardines concentrate here and squids,
octopuses and lobsters are also abundant. It is not strange
to spot dolphins or whales during the journey from Margarita
and there are also many sea birds.
All
inclusive day tours by motor or sailboats leave daily
from points in Margarita, including Porlamar and Juangriego. The tour includes fishing
on the way, visit to the tranquil beaches
to snorkel (equipment included) in the clear waters surrounded
by a great variety of fish and coral, lunch, snacks and
open bar with soft drinks, juices, beer and rum. Los Frailes
hide the best dives close to Margarita,
the sites being comparable to those in Los
Roques Archipelago National Park. Diving
between barracudas, moray eels, arrow crabs, angel, parrot
and many other tropical fish is optional.
