Primary tourist destination of Venezuela,
Margarita Island attracts international visitors for sun-bathing,
duty-free shopping and wind-surfing. With modern, deluxe
hotels, varied restaurants and rhythmic nightlife, it's
Venezuela's largest island and is accessed by daily direct
flights from most main cities in Venezuela or by ferryboat
from the cities of Puerto La Cruz and Cumana to Porlamar,
founded in 1536, it's most important city.
Our preferred property,
the Hesperia Isla Margarita Golf, Spa, Casino and Beach
Resort, is Margarita's most luxurious. It features spacious,
luxurious rooms, full european spa facilities, two swimming
pools, direct access to a private caribbean beach, day
and night entertainment, four restaurants, two bars, an
18-hole golf course, tennis courts, and water sports.
The Margarita Hilton & Suites is ideally located 5
minutes away from downtown Porlamar and just 20 minutes
from the airport and offers private balcony and
panoramic view of the Caribbean from all its rooms, daily
program of sport and social activities, private beach
and an ample selection to water sports plus swimming pool,
tennis courts, gym, three restaurants, four bars and a
night club.
Visit Margarita's fortresses
and ancient churches, dating to 1571, to trace the Indian
and Spanish past of the island. Take a day tour by boat
to Coche or Cubagua Islands, located nearby. Surf in Parguito
Beach or Playa Caribe and windsurf in the world famous
El Yaque Beach. Enjoy an unforgettable sunset in Juan
Griego's spectacular bay. Journey through the beautiful
channels in La Restinga National Park, place of exceptional
natural splendor, mangroves and rich bird life. Palms,
vines, ferns, orchids and bromeliads abound in Cerro El
Copey National Park, a mountainous area where it is not
hard to spot orioles, carib grackles and the rufous-tailed
jacamar. Scuba dive in El Farallon, a rocky islet off
the bay of Pampatar, or in Los Frailes, easily seen from
Playa El Agua. Visit the Museum of the Sea in Boca del
Rio, in the Macanao Peninsula, a semi desert terrain where
you can see parrots, cardinals and troupials.
Historically, Margarita
derived its name from the Greek word meaning pearl, which
were once plentiful here in sizes as large as bird eggs.
Today, however, the "Pearl" of Venezuela is
primarily known for its sandy, clear beaches, tropical
breezes and spectacular sunsets. Located in the northeastern
part of Venezuela (some 15 miles from the mainland), it
has nearly 200 miles of shores and lovely beaches, averaging
87ºF all year round.
