A tiny and unknown
Pemon indian village until the 60's, Canaima is now the
main getaway to experience the irresistible natural beauty
and attractions of the western sector of the Canaima National
Park. Set amid a spectacular setting where the brownish
Carrao River forms the pink-sand and scenic Canaima Lagoon
and surrounded by magnificent falls, tepuys and savannahs,
this is also your jumping off point for visiting Angel
Falls.
A
wide variety of tours are available from this unique place.
Go on our flagship Angel
Falls River Venture and meet face to face with the
world's highest waterfall and the Auyantepuy,
or take a day trip or do an overflight if you are short
of time. On your way back, stop by the 20 m high Sapo
Falls and cross through its water curtain to catch a glimpse
of the Nonoi-tepuy in the distance. Take a short boat
tour of the Canaima Lagoon and get close to the Ucaima,
Golondrina and Hacha Falls while the Kurun, Venado and
Kuravaina tepuys provide the background. Drive through
palm-peppered savannah and then navigate down river to
beautiful Yuri Falls. Take a plane and fly to Kavak, in
the southeastern slopes of the Auyan-tepui, to spend the
day visiting one of the narrowest gorges in the planet,
and add an Angel Falls overflight to the experience.
Our
preferred lodgings in Canaima are Jungle
Rudy's Camp Ucaima, incredibly located above the falls
of the Canaima Lagoon at the very edges of the Carrao
River and with a wonderful view of the inspiring surroundings.
The elegant Wakü
Lodge provides a nice view of the falls in the Canaima
Lagoon, while Camp
Parakaupa is perfect for students and groups.
Daily,
direct flights link Canaima with Caracas
and Ciudad Bolivar while is also possible to arrange a
small plane flight from Puerto Ordaz, Santa Elena de Uairen
or even Margarita Island.
