El Tisure Hiking & Horseback Riding Andean Adventure

To truly experience a country, one must walk or horseback ride. Our tailor-made hikes to remote and delightful places will show you the magic of the Andes and the charm of its people. As you ride or walk, you will experience the real Venezuela few tourists ever get to see, catching glimpses of authentic traditions and lifestyles of these mountainous people forgotten by the course of time.

Day 1: Start from Merida, capital of the Venezuelan Andes, with a jeep ride to San Rafael, an old colonial village standing on pre-conquest foundations. Begin to walk, gradually ascending a picturesque valley to reach "La Ventana" (The Window) pass at 13,200 feet. In the afternoon we descend to El Tisure valley, surrounded by glacier lakes, moraines and unique ecosystems (B, L, D)

Day 2: Spend the day exploring El Tisure valley, home to the only high altitude hummingbird, the Bearded Helmetcrest, the Black-chested Buzzard Eagle and the mighty Andean Condor. Observe the stone chapel handmade piece by piece by the mystic/hermit Juan Felix Sanchez. End with a walk to El Jumo mountain range (B, L, D)

Day 3/4 : Hike across the range to the village of El Carrizal, standing at 5,350 feet and surrounded by dense tropical cloud forest. The route take us through the Saisai mountain range. From the village we should be able to see the Llanos, the great plains of central Venezuela. We have time to explore the surroundings and take refreshing baths in pools of the Canagua River, before walking to El Jumo (B, L, D)

Day 5 : Cross back the range to return to San Rafael by a different route which takes us over the Misteque pass to Gavidea. On arrival, jeep back to Merida for a well reserved rest. Overnight at a lodge in Merida (B, L, D)

Day 6 : Tour the diverse culture of the Andes before embarking on your journey elsewhere (B)
