Gran Sabana Tour, Lost World

A 3 days and 2 nights driving journey of Venezuela's Gran Sabana, a UNESCO's World Heritage Site

Starts in Puerto Ordaz and finishes in Santa Elena de Uairén (Reverse order possible)

Day 1: Puerto Ordaz - Gran Sabana

Start the trip with a short visit of Puerto Ordaz, then drive south through several mine towns. Stop for lunch and then continue driving south to the ascending Sierra de Lema. Stop in Piedra de La Virgen, a huge stone from the precambrian era, the unofficial entrance to Canaima National Park's eastern sector: The Gran Sabana. Enjoy the 180º panorama of savannah dotted with tepuys in the distance. Reach the tourist camp at the end of the afternoon where travelers will overnight. (L, D)

Day 2: Gran Sabana - Santa Elena de Uairen

Drive west to Liwo Riwo (Iboribo) and navigate the Aponguao (Aponwao) River to the imposing Chinak Merú Falls, also known as Aponwao Falls. Then head south again to Kamoirán Rapids and visit Kawi Falls, Kama Merú Falls and Yuruaní Falls. Stay alert for road sights of Kukenán and Mount Roraima, the highest table top mountain in Venezuela. Arrive to the frontier town of Santa Elena de Uairén by the end of the afternoon. Overnight in a tourist camp. (B, L, D)

Day 3: Santa Elena de Uairen

Transfer to the airport. (B)

Longer versions of this tour are available, including three and four night adaptations plus a special four night alternative featuring El Paují. A wealth of pre or post extensions are possible, including a trek to Mount Roraima Tepuy, visits to El Paují , one of Venezuela's newest communities, for birding or trekking to the rarely visited Pemón Indian community of Wonkén, a trek to Auyantepuy, Venezuela's largest tepui, and a river trip through fascinating and unique landscape from Kavak to Angel Falls and Canaima.
