A
4 nights journey by river through tropical rain
forest to the base of one of the most stunning, yet
least visited waterfalls
in Venezuela
From
$ per person, double occupancy for 2003
Day
1: Ciudad Bolivar (or Puerto Ordaz) - Las Trincheras
Reception
in the airports of Ciudad Bolívar or Puerto Ordaz
and overland transfer to the Caura
Lodge in Las Trincheras, a town of farmers and fishers
on the Caura River banks. Dinner and overnight. (D)
Day
2: Las Trincheras - El Playon
After
breakfast, aboard a motorized indigenous dugout canoe
locally known as "curiara" and begin navigating
upriver negotiating different rapids, including the Yokoré
Island's and the Cinco Mil (Five Thousand), so baptized
because of the indian legend of a boat sunken in this
place with a treasure of five thousand gold morocotas
(coins). Stop in a river beach for lunch and a good post
meal swim. Stay alert for wildlife
such as river dolphins, otters, turtles and an abundance
of birds.
Continue cruising
the Caura passing by the mouth of the Nichare River, the
first important tributary of the Caura and reach El Playón,
a jungle
indigenous camp located just 1148 feet from the falls,
by the end of the afternoon. Dinner and overnight in hammocks
with mosquito nets. (B, L, D)
Day
3: El Playon - Para Falls - El Playon
After
breakfast, set off for the hike
through dense rain forest to the impressive base of the
falls, where the communication turns difficult because
of the deafening noise. Go up and appreciate a great portion
of the Caura Amazon
territory and its natural beauty. A full day is needed
to reach the top of the falls at 689 feet height and return
to El Playón, but the effort is worth it due to
the spectacular falls and the refreshing swims taken.
Lunch is had in the falls' top. Dinner and overnight in
hammocks with mosquito nets. (B, L, D)
Day
4 El Playon - Las Trincheras
Breakfast
and down river navigation from El Playón to Las
Trincheras, visiting the Yekuana (Makiritare) indian communities
of the Caura riverbanks. If lucky enough spot members
of the Hoti and Sanema tribes, which are related to the
Yanomami. Dinner and overnight in the Caura
Lodge. (B, L, D)
Day
5 Las Trincheras - Ciudad Bolivar (or Puerto Ordaz)
Breakfast
and overland transfer from Las Trincheras to the airports
of Ciudad Bolívar or Puerto Ordaz. (B)
