Starts
and finish in Santa Elena de Uairen
Tepuis, or table top mountains, are giant sandstone mesas
that look like mountains with the tops cut off. From the
Guayana Shield in southern Venezuela rise many tepuis
and you will climb the highest of one them, Roraima. On
top of these remote, massive land formations remains some
of the last yet uncut primary vegetation found no where
else on earth. Pemon Indians are porters.
Day
1 Santa Elena de Uairen – Paraitepui – Tek River
Depart
Santa Elena de Uairen in the morning for the Pemon Indian
settlement of Paraitepui. Start hiking across gentle hills
and savannahs to the Tek River. Overnight in tents. (L,
D)
Day
2 Tek River – Base Camp
Cross
the Tek River and a little bit later, the wider Kukenan
River. Continue hiking to the so-called Military Camp
(lunch will be served here) and then to the scenic Base
Camp, located at the very feet of Roraima. Overnight in
tents. (B, L, D)
Day
3 Base Camp – Roraima’s Summit
Walk
steeply through tropical forest to Roraima’s summit enjoying
incredible views of the savannah below. Have lunch in
a hidden waterfall midway. Overnight in tents. (B, L,
D)
Day
4 On Roraima’s Summit
The
whole day is available to explore the summit of Roraima.
Excursions will depend on weather and may include walking
to the Kukenan Window for a view of Roraima’s eastern
wall, Kukenan Tepuy and the jungle below. Another alternative
is Triple Point, the place where the frontiers of Venezuela,
Brazil and Guyana meet atop this eerie landform. Visit
the Valley of Crystals, icy blue wells known as the “Jacuzzis”
and experience the endemic plant and animal life plus
strange and numberless rock formations sculpted by millions
of years of erosion. Overnight in tents. (B, L, D)
Day
5 Roraima’s Summit – Tek River
Go
down the summit and have lunch at base camp before crossing
rivers Kukenan and Tek. Overnight in tents. (B, L, D)
Day
6 Tek River – Paraitepuy – Santa Elena de Uairen
Hike
from the Tek River to Paraitepuy, enjoy lunch and then
transfer back to Santa Elena de Uairen.
