Brazil is the fifth largest country in the world and has the sixth largest population. The tropical redwood pao de brasil gave the country its name. The Portuguese first landed here in 1500, but Rio de Janeiro was settled by the French in 1555 and taken over by the Portuguese in 1567. Rio (90ft.) is famous for its natural setting and Carnival. The city was declared the capital of Brazil in 1834 and remained so until 1960.
