Archaelogical Ruins, Chile
The
Atacama Desert has many remnants of ancient Andean civilizations.
The few existing oasis in the barren desert have been occupied
for thousands of years, where the inhabitants have been
able to gather seeds, raise livestock and eventually grow
crops. Visit ruins from an ancient village that was excavated
and is slowly being reclaimed by the sands. Climb to the
top of an adobe fortress used for the town's defense against
the Spanish. San Pedro de Atacama also has a interesting
museum documenting the timeline of human population in the
area. Our preferred hotels in this region are Explora
Lodge Atacama and Hotel
Terrantai.
