Called
a living fossil, as it's one of the oldest plant species
in the world. Found in the Huascaran National Park in
Huaraz, Ancash Peru, it is protected as an endangered
species. The largest member of the bromeliad family, the
plants grow to be approximately 6 feet wide with flowers
that can reach heights of 39 feet. Each plant flowers
only once every one hundred years and they tend to flower
in groups every 3 to 4 years with peaks in May and late
October. Even when it's not in flower the Puya Raimondi
is a sight to see with birds often nesting in the rosettes.
