Lake
Titicaca is the highest navigable lake in the world
and home to the fascinating micro culture of the Uros
Indians that live on floating islands and boats made from
totora reeds. On a day trip visit a reed island and Taquile
Island from Puno. Overnight
accommodations on Taquile
Island or Amantani
Island are with local families. The island is peaceful
with no cars and the only electricity is provided by solar
panels. The inhabitants farm the rocky island, make their
own yarn from the sheep and goats, dyes from vegetable
products and knit intricate cloth. Or on Suasi Island
experience the very comfortable accommodations at Suasi
Lodge. The lodge is almost completely sustainable
with solar electricity and farms with native and introduced
fruit and vegetables. Those with an interest in travel
to Bolivia may want to travel over Lake Titicaca by hydrofoil
or high speed boat to reach their destination. From the
boat landing in Bolivia, passengers are transferred to
La Paz for yet another adventure.
Manu
Lodge overlooks a 1.24-mile-long and 590 ft.
wide oxbow lake, which is surrounded by huge, vine-festooned
tropical trees. Herons, kingfishers, hoatzins, monkeys
and black caiman may be seen from a couple of lake piers
or from a comfortable catamaran, and on the edge of the
lake there is a mineral lick where rare birds such as
razor-billed curassows and piping guans are often seen.
No other lodge in South America simultaneously provides
a pristine tropical lake in a protected wilderness and
a view of the majestic Andes!
