Photography tours in Venezuela

From the sunny sea level and the Caribbean islands to the high and snow-capped Andean peaks, Venezuela boasts a spectacular and varied geography that also includes deserts, paramos, dark rain and cloud forests and the unique flattop mesas known as tepuis. Add a rich wildlife, some well preserved colonial architecture and a wonderful melt of people and get prepared to be warned: Be sure to bring lots of film, because in this beautiful country, every twinkle of an eye could mean the perfect shot.

For good panoramic pictures of Caracas and Venezuela’s central coast, hike up to the Avila Mount. Enjoy a gourmet lunch or dinner in one of several restaurants in the agricultural village of Galipan and return to the city in the recently reopened cable car system. Also close to Caracas, transport yourself to Germany in less than an hour, visiting Colonia Tovar. Founded by German immigrants, this picturesque village boasts a nice climate and all things German: architecture, customs, faces, garments and scenic valley slopes planted with strawberries, blackberries and peaches.

The Venezuelan Andes offer breathtaking views of the country’s highest areas plus a blend of traditional Andean towns, pretty colonial villages, extremely polite and educated people, reddish faces due to the high altitude, restored coffee haciendas that are centuries old and out of this world landscapes with a very diverse plant and flower life. Balcones de La Musui is a very good place to photograph the snow-capped peaks of the Sierra Nevada, and paramos and glacier lakes surround the charming Hotel Los Frailes. In our 4 nights Andes Adventure Tour, walk and horseback ride to the high hamlet of Los Nevados and return to Merida in the world’s highest and longest cable car system. Fingers and camera shutters will get tired in our 6 nights Birding in the Venezuelan Andes Tour, an in-depth birdwatching experience amid diverse habitats highlighting the world’s only high altitude hummingbird, the Andean Condor and the Andean Cock-of-the-Rock.

The flatlands, locally known as the Llanos, offer the greatest opportunity to photograph the local wildlife, including more than 300 species of birds and an assortment of mammals, reptiles and fish. A fantastic contrast to this incredible natural world is the perfectly connected world of the Llaneros, the local cowboys, hearty and very hospitable souls whose hard-working lifestyle and unforgettable folk music (most famous in Venezuela) have become a unique facet of the country’s diverse culture. Picture their everyday chores, including milking, cheese manufacturing, cattle handling and horseback riding and the Llanos’ incredible sunsets.

In the seldom-visited Venezuelan Amazon, visit sacred tabletop mountains, the country’s most primitive and pure ethnic groups to learn about their ancestral traditions and way of life and navigate the pristine and wildlife-packed rivers of this incredible jungle region, including upper portions of Venezuela’s largest, the Orinoco. Photograph fishermen in their everyday chores, several species of birds, fresh water dolphins, playful giant river otters and Venezuela’s biggest petroglyph. Retrace the route followed by the famous German naturalist Alexander von Humboldt and picture seldom-seen tepuys, river deltas, waterfalls, Yanomami communities and exotic birds, animals and plants.

Venezuela’s unique Lost World has plenty to capture on film, beginning with Angel Falls, the world’s highest. Fantastic photo opportunities abound in an overflight of this world wonder and the tabletop mesa from which it falls. Below, dense and lush green jungle, meandering rivers and endless savannahs make for incredible shots as well. Full day and multi-day tours are available. Highly endemism is characteristic of these flattop sandstone mountains known as tepuis. Be sure to carry a macro to portrait the wonderful and tiny plants and flowers, insects, birds and small animals atop the Auyantepuy and the Roraima. Canaima is the same to say photogenic. The very scenic Canaima Lagoon is lined by pink sand beaches and surrounded by tepuys, savannahs and full waterfalls.
